Collecting Data You Can Actually Use

Plan systematic research data collection, develop appropriate instruments, manage and protect your data, and document how information was collected so it remains accurate, interpretable, organized, and ready for analysis.

Why This Stage Matters

Your findings can only be as good as your data.

A carefully designed study can still fail when the data are collected poorly. Small choices involving instruments, interviews, coding, missing responses, file organization, documentation, and storage can accumulate into problems that become difficult or impossible to repair once data collection has ended.

Reliable data collection requires researchers to decide what information is needed and how it will be obtained consistently. Surveys, interviews, focus groups, observations, secondary sources, and other methods each introduce practical questions involving instrument quality, researcher judgment, data quality, and consistency across participants or observations.

Good data must also remain understandable after they have been collected. Clear documentation, organized files, secure storage, sensible backups, data dictionaries, and careful handling of missing or unusual observations help preserve the meaning and quality of the information when the study eventually moves into analysis.
