Research Funding, Grants & Financial Support
Understand research funding, identify and evaluate opportunities, prepare grant applications and budgets, manage awards responsibly, and build a sustainable funding strategy.
Funding shapes what research can be attempted, but it should not determine what evidence says.
Research funding can determine whether a project is feasible, how quickly it can proceed, what resources are available, and how much infrastructure a research team can sustain. For many researchers, finding appropriate support is therefore part of planning the research itself.
Applying for funding involves more than writing a persuasive proposal. Researchers need to understand eligibility, funder priorities, review criteria, budgets, institutional requirements, timelines, conflicts of interest, and the responsibilities that continue after an award is made.
Funding also creates obligations. Researchers must manage awarded resources responsibly, report accurately, follow the approved scope, and protect the independence and integrity of the research even when sponsors or institutional expectations create competing pressures.
From funding need to sustainable research support
Find appropriate funding, develop stronger proposals and budgets, navigate review and awards, and manage research support responsibly.
Guides for this supplement are being prepared.
Winning funding is not the same as succeeding in research.
A funded project still needs sound implementation, responsible financial management, ethical conduct, and evidence that justifies the resources invested in the work.
