Should You Define What the Study Will Not Attempt to Answer?

You do not need to list everything a study will not investigate. However, explicitly defining consequential boundaries can prevent readers from attributing questions or claims to the study that its design was never intended to address.

01 · The Question

Do Researchers Need to Say What Their Study Will Not Answer?

A research question tells readers what you intend to investigate. The scope defines the boundaries within which that investigation takes place. In principle, those statements should already indicate what belongs inside the study.

Yet some boundaries are not obvious. Readers may reasonably expect you to compare populations that you intentionally do not compare, investigate an outcome that seems closely related to your main one, explain a mechanism when you intend only to describe an association, or generalize beyond the context you actually study.

Should you explicitly say that those questions are outside the study, or is that unnecessary?

02 · The Short Answer

Define Consequential Non-Questions, Not Every Possible Exclusion

In Brief

Yes, when a plausible interpretation of the study could lead readers to expect an answer that the design is intentionally not meant to provide, it is useful to define that boundary explicitly.

You do not need an exhaustive catalogue of everything the study will not examine. State exclusions selectively when they clarify the scope, distinguish the study from a neighboring question, prevent overinterpretation, or explain a deliberate methodological choice.

03 · What You Need to Know

A Good Scope Defines the Edge of the Question, Not Just Its Center

Every Research Question Has an Implied Outside

Research questions necessarily exclude possibilities. A study asking how university students use generative AI for academic writing does not automatically investigate every use of AI, every student population, every educational level, or every possible outcome of AI use.

Much of that exclusion does not need to be stated. Readers can infer it from a precise question and a well-defined scope.

The need for explicit boundary-setting arises when the outside is close enough to the actual question that a reasonable reader could mistake it for part of the inquiry.

Distinguish Scope Boundaries From Limitations

Researchers sometimes describe everything a study does not do as a limitation. That collapses two different ideas.

Delimitation or scope boundary A deliberate decision about what the study is designed to investigate or exclude.
Limitation A constraint, weakness, or characteristic of the study that may affect the strength, interpretation, or applicability of its findings.

If you intentionally study undergraduate students because your question concerns undergraduate learning, not studying postgraduate students is a boundary of the inquiry. If recruitment difficulties leave important parts of your intended undergraduate population underrepresented, that may instead create a limitation.

The distinction matters because scope, delimitations, and limitations perform different functions in explaining a study.

State a Non-Question When Readers Could Reasonably Expect It to Be Answered

Some research topics naturally invite neighboring questions. If you study an association, readers may wonder about causation. If you evaluate adoption, they may assume you are evaluating effectiveness. If you study short-term outcomes, they may expect conclusions about persistence. If you investigate one population, they may infer applicability to a larger population.

In these situations, one concise boundary statement can prevent considerable confusion.

For example: "The study examines students' reported use of generative AI and its association with writing practices; it does not estimate the causal effect of AI use on writing performance."

That sentence does more than announce an omission. It distinguishes two scientifically different questions.

State a Non-Question When a Deliberate Exclusion Is Methodologically Consequential

If you deliberately exclude a variable, population, setting, comparison, or outcome that readers would reasonably consider relevant, explaining the exclusion may strengthen transparency.

This does not mean every exclusion needs a paragraph of defense. The explanation should be proportionate to the importance of what was excluded. A consequential exclusion deserves more attention because it changes how the study should be interpreted.

This is especially important when deciding whether to explain why particular variables or populations were excluded.

Negative Boundaries Can Clarify the Type of Claim Being Made

One of the most useful functions of an explicit boundary is to distinguish among different forms of inquiry.

A descriptive study may document what is happening without explaining why. A correlational analysis may estimate associations without identifying causal effects. An implementation study may investigate how an intervention is adopted without establishing whether the intervention improves outcomes. An exploratory qualitative study may seek to understand experiences without estimating their prevalence in a population.

These distinctions are often more informative than a generic statement that something is "outside the scope." They tell readers what kind of answer the design is capable of producing.

Do Not Turn the Scope Into an Inventory of Everything You Did Not Study

Any research project could generate an almost infinite list of exclusions. A study of online learning might announce that it does not investigate primary schools, workplace training, augmented reality, neurological outcomes, national economic productivity, or lunar classrooms. At some point the methodology begins to resemble a very anxious disclaimer.

The relevant exclusions are those sufficiently close to the research question that stating them helps readers understand the intended boundaries.

Watch Out

Do not use an "outside the scope" statement to evade a question that your own research objective logically requires. If an excluded population, comparison, variable, or outcome is necessary to answer the stated question, the problem is not insufficient boundary wording. The question or design is misaligned.

Do Not Use Scope Statements to Immunize Claims From Criticism

Researchers sometimes respond to a methodological concern by saying, "That was outside the scope." Sometimes that response is correct. Sometimes the allegedly external issue is necessary for interpreting the central claim.

Suppose a study asks whether an educational intervention improves achievement but measures only students' satisfaction. Achievement cannot be declared outside the scope while the original effectiveness claim remains intact. Either the evidence must address the question or the question must change.

This is closely related to whether a delimitation genuinely protects the study or merely makes the question easier.

Where Should These Boundaries Be Stated?

There is no universal section title or placement that applies across all disciplines, journals, theses, and dissertations. Institutional templates and disciplinary conventions differ.

Conceptually, the most important requirement is that the boundary appears where readers need it. A major population or contextual boundary may belong in the question, objectives, or scope statement. Eligibility boundaries belong in the methods. A distinction between association and causation may need to be evident in the research question, analysis, and interpretation rather than appearing only in a late disclaimer.

For theses and dissertations, follow the required institutional format when one is prescribed. The label used by a template matters less scientifically than ensuring that the question, scope, methods, and conclusions remain aligned.

Define the Boundary Positively When Possible

Negative statements are sometimes useful, but a precise positive statement is often stronger.

Instead of writing, "This study will not investigate students outside University X," you might state, "The study examines undergraduate students enrolled at University X during the specified study period." The boundary is already clear.

Add an explicit exclusion only when it resolves genuine ambiguity: "The study does not attempt to estimate whether the observed relationships generalize to students at other institutions."

The combination is effective because the positive statement defines what the study does, while the negative statement prevents a specific and plausible overextension.

How One Boundary Statement Can Prevent the Wrong Interpretation

Hypothetical Example

Studying Student Acceptance of an AI Feedback System

A researcher surveys undergraduate students after they use an AI-assisted feedback system. The study measures perceived usefulness, ease of use, intention to continue using the system, and students' experiences with the feedback.

What the study can answer The evidence can address students' perceptions, acceptance, intended use, and reported experiences within the studied context.
What readers might infer Because the technology provides academic feedback, readers may assume that the study also establishes whether the system improves learning or writing performance.
What the design lacks No appropriate learning-performance outcome or design for estimating an effect on achievement is included.
Useful boundary State that the study examines acceptance and user experience rather than the effect of the system on academic performance.
Result The boundary does not weaken the study. It prevents an acceptance study from being interpreted as an effectiveness study.
05 · What Researchers Often Get Wrong

Common Mistakes When Describing What a Study Will Not Answer

Misconception

You Need to List Everything Outside the Scope

No. An exhaustive list is usually unnecessary and potentially distracting. Identify boundaries that are consequential, potentially ambiguous, or necessary for interpreting the study correctly.

Misconception

Anything the Study Does Not Cover Is a Limitation

Not every omission represents a weakness. Deliberately restricting the study to the population or phenomenon actually named in the research question may simply define its scope.

Misconception

Saying Something Is Outside the Scope Makes the Exclusion Acceptable

Labeling an issue does not justify excluding it. If that issue is essential to answering the research question, the study remains misaligned regardless of how clearly the exclusion is disclosed.

Misconception

Explicit Boundaries Make a Study Look Weak

Clear boundaries can do the opposite. They help readers understand precisely what evidence the study intends to provide and reduce the risk of inflated claims. A bounded contribution is still a contribution.

The Scope Section Is the Only Place Boundaries Matter

No. Boundaries should remain consistent throughout the study. The title, question, objectives, eligibility criteria, methods, interpretation, and conclusions should not quietly expand beyond the actual investigation.

06 · What This Means for You

State an Exclusion When It Prevents a Plausible Misreading

You can decide whether a negative boundary deserves explicit mention by asking what a reasonable reader might infer from the study if you did not state it.

A simple decision framework

If the exclusion is already unmistakable from a precise research question and scope
You probably do not need a separate statement about what the study will not answer.
If readers could reasonably mistake a neighboring question for part of the study
State the boundary explicitly and concisely.
If a population, variable, setting, comparison, or period was deliberately excluded and the decision materially affects interpretation
Explain the exclusion and its consequence for the study's claims.
If the supposed exclusion is actually necessary to answer the stated research question
Do not solve the problem with a disclaimer. Revise the design or the question.
If you have accumulated a long list of unrelated things the study does not cover
Remove the obvious or irrelevant items and retain only boundaries that improve interpretation.

The strongest scope statement usually emphasizes what the study does investigate. Negative boundaries should be selective additions that sharpen that positive definition, not the organizing principle of the section.

Decide Which Non-Questions Need to Be Stated

Before adding an explicit exclusion, check:
Is the study's actual question already stated precisely?
Could a reasonable reader expect this excluded issue to be part of the study?
Does stating the exclusion clarify the type of claim the study can make?
Was the exclusion deliberate, or is it actually an unplanned constraint or limitation?
If the exclusion is consequential, have I explained why it was made?
Does the exclusion remove evidence necessary to answer the stated question?
Are my conclusions restricted to what remains inside the study's actual boundaries?
Can any unnecessary negative statements be replaced by a clearer positive description of the scope?

Questions About Stating What Research Will Not Cover

Do I need a separate section called "What the Study Will Not Cover"?

Usually not unless your institution, discipline, or required format asks for one. Important boundaries can often be communicated through the research question, scope and delimitations, methods, or other appropriate parts of the study.

Should I state populations that are excluded from the study?

State consequential population boundaries clearly, particularly when they affect interpretation or when readers might reasonably expect those populations to be included. Eligibility criteria should also be reported appropriately in the methods.

Should excluded variables be listed?

Not every variable related to the topic needs to be mentioned. Explain exclusions when the omitted variable is sufficiently important that readers may reasonably question its absence or when excluding it materially shapes what the study can answer.

Is saying "causality is outside the scope" enough for a correlational study?

The more important requirement is that the research question, design, analysis, and conclusions avoid unsupported causal claims. An explicit statement can help clarify the boundary, but it cannot compensate for causal language elsewhere in the study.

Are delimitations the same as exclusion criteria?

They overlap conceptually but are not identical. Delimitations describe deliberate boundaries of the study more broadly, while inclusion and exclusion criteria operationalize who or what is eligible for participation or analysis in a particular design.

Can stating what the study will not answer help prevent scope creep?

Yes. Explicitly identifying consequential non-objectives can help a research team distinguish interesting adjacent questions from the agreed project. That can support maintaining the intended scope once the project is underway.

What if an excluded issue becomes important after the study starts?

Reassess whether it is essential to the existing research question or represents a worthwhile new question. Adding it may require a justified protocol or scope change, while a genuinely separate question may be better reserved for subsequent research.

Define the Boundary When It Changes How the Study Should Be Read

The Bottom Line

You should explicitly state what a study will not attempt to answer when doing so clarifies a consequential boundary, distinguishes the study from a plausible neighboring question, or prevents readers from making claims that the design cannot support.

Do not produce an exhaustive list of everything left out. Define the study positively first, then identify only those exclusions that materially improve interpretation. And if something you want to exclude is actually necessary to answer the stated question, change the question or design rather than relying on an "outside the scope" disclaimer.
