How to Set Clear and Defensible Research Boundaries
What Is the Scope of a Research Study?
The scope describes the extent or coverage of the research. It tells readers what the study actually investigates and establishes the boundaries within which the research question will be answered.
Depending on the study, the scope may identify the population or cases, research setting, period covered, variables or phenomena examined, outcomes of interest, and broad methodological approach. Philippine Department of Education research materials similarly describe scope in terms of parameters such as the target population, research locale, duration, design, procedures, and instruments.
Not every study needs the same set of boundaries. A historical analysis may require a carefully defined time period and source corpus. A qualitative interview study may be bounded by participants, setting, and phenomenon of interest. An experimental study may require explicit intervention, comparison, outcome, and population boundaries.
The research question should determine which boundaries matter.
What Are Delimitations?
Delimitations are boundaries created by choices you deliberately make when designing the study. They explain why the investigation focuses on certain populations, settings, variables, periods, theories, data sources, or other elements rather than attempting to cover every possibility.
For example, you might deliberately study first-year university students rather than students at every academic level because your research problem specifically concerns the transition into university. You might examine one defined outcome rather than several loosely related outcomes because that outcome directly corresponds to the primary research question.
In both cases, the exclusion is intentional. The delimitation helps create a coherent study rather than merely describing something that went wrong.
Scope
Defines what the study covers and the overall boundaries within which the research operates.
Delimitations
Reflect the deliberate choices used to establish or narrow those boundaries and, where necessary, explain why certain possibilities are excluded.
Scope, Delimitations, and Limitations Are Not the Same Thing
The terminology is sometimes used inconsistently across institutions and research traditions, so follow the definitions required by your department, supervisor, journal, or proposal template. A common and useful distinction is that delimitations arise from choices made by the researcher, whereas limitations are constraints or weaknesses that the researcher cannot fully eliminate or control.

A boundary can sometimes involve both practical constraints and deliberate design choices, which is why rigid labels are not always helpful. What matters is that you explain accurately what you chose, what you could not control, and how those circumstances affect interpretation.
Start With the Research Question
The scope should not be invented independently of the research question. Start by asking what evidence is actually required to answer that question.
If the question concerns the experiences of a particular professional group, the scope should include people capable of providing evidence about those experiences. If the question examines a relationship between two defined variables, the scope should preserve the variables and population needed to investigate that relationship.
A useful test is to place your research question beside your proposed scope. Every major inclusion should serve the question, and every major exclusion should leave the question answerable.
If narrowing the scope changes what the study is fundamentally asking, you may need to revise the research question as well.
Define the Population, Participants, Cases, or Units of Analysis
State clearly who or what the study concerns. Depending on the research, this might include people, organizations, schools, hospitals, countries, documents, publications, datasets, events, specimens, social-media posts, experiments, or other units.
Do not stop at a broad label when important eligibility characteristics matter. “University students,” for example, could include undergraduate and postgraduate students across many programs, ages, enrollment arrangements, and institutions.
Your inclusion and exclusion choices should follow from the research problem and design rather than from a desire to make the study sound more specific.
Define the Geographic or Contextual Boundary When It Matters
Some studies are inherently tied to a location or setting. A study might concern one healthcare system, community, school district, ecological region, laboratory environment, organization, country, or online platform.
State the setting clearly and explain consequential restrictions. If you study one institution because that institution represents a theoretically relevant context, say so. If the restriction exists because only that site is accessible, acknowledge the practical basis rather than inventing a theoretical justification.
A geographic boundary also affects interpretation. Evidence obtained in one setting should not automatically be treated as though it represents every other setting.
Define the Time Boundary
Many research questions have a temporal scope. You may study events during a particular historical period, records from selected years, participants followed for a defined duration, or experiences associated with a particular stage or event.
The time period should have a reason. It may correspond to a policy change, technological development, available data period, theoretical concern, project timeline, or another relevant feature of the research.
Distinguish the period your evidence represents from the dates on which you happen to collect it. A researcher might collect historical documents in 2026 while studying events from 2010 to 2020. Those are different temporal boundaries.
Define Which Variables, Concepts, Outcomes, or Phenomena Are Inside the Study
Broad topics often contain many possible dimensions. A study of “social media and student well-being,” for example, could examine anxiety, sleep, loneliness, academic engagement, social connection, body image, attention, or numerous other outcomes.
If your question concerns sleep quality, define the study around that outcome rather than quietly expanding the project into a general investigation of well-being.
This is particularly important when related variables are interesting but not necessary for the primary question. Every additional outcome or concept can increase data requirements, analytical complexity, participant burden, and the risk of unfocused interpretation.
Define the Methodological Boundary Without Rewriting Your Methods Section
The scope may need to identify broad methodological boundaries because the method affects what kind of evidence the study can produce. For example, a study may deliberately use interviews to investigate experiences rather than attempting to estimate population prevalence, or analyze existing records rather than collect new data.
You do not need to reproduce every procedural detail in the scope statement. The full methodology belongs elsewhere. Include enough to make the nature and boundaries of the investigation clear.
Some educational guidance includes research design, data-gathering procedures, instruments, and analysis within the scope and delimitation section. If your institution provides a required structure, follow it.
Distinguish Necessary Boundaries From Convenient Ones
Some delimitations follow directly from the research problem. Others arise because of practical constraints such as time, funding, access, or expertise.
Both can be legitimate, but they should not be disguised as the same thing.
Substantive boundary
A population, outcome, setting, theory, or period is selected because it is central to the research question.
Practical boundary
The project is narrowed because of available time, access, funding, data, expertise, or other feasibility considerations.
Suppose you study only one university. If the university has characteristics central to your research problem, the boundary may be substantively justified. If you selected it because it is the only institution you can access, that is primarily a feasibility decision.
Practical boundaries are not automatically bad research. The important issue is whether the resulting study can still answer a worthwhile question and whether you are transparent about the implications.
Do Not Add Boundaries Just to Make the Study Look Focused
A narrowly worded project is not necessarily a well-designed project. Researchers can manufacture apparent specificity by adding an institution, location, age group, program, year level, demographic characteristic, and short time period without explaining why any of them matter.
Every important delimitation should survive a simple question: Why this boundary?
If the answer is “because otherwise the title would be too broad,” continue thinking. A defensible boundary should improve conceptual focus, methodological coherence, feasibility, interpretability, or alignment with the research problem.
Be Explicit About What the Study Does Not Attempt to Answer
Readers can easily assume a broader purpose than you intended, especially when your topic has obvious neighboring questions.
If you examine association rather than causation, make that boundary clear. If you investigate perceptions rather than objectively measured behavior, say so. If your study evaluates short-term outcomes rather than long-term consequences, identify that boundary.
Useful delimitations prevent readers from evaluating the study against questions it was never designed to answer.
Do Not Use Delimitations to Excuse a Poor Design
There is an important difference between defining a focused study and excluding something necessary to answer the question.
Suppose your question asks whether an intervention is more effective than an alternative, but you deliberately collect data only from people receiving the intervention. Calling the missing comparison a “delimitation” does not make the design capable of answering the comparative question.
Likewise, excluding an essential population, outcome, measurement, or period can make a project easier while destroying its ability to address the original research problem.
Watch Out
A researcher-controlled boundary is not automatically methodologically defensible. Every delimitation should preserve the study's ability to answer the research question credibly.
Think About Generalizability and Transferability Without Overclaiming
Your scope helps establish the context within which the findings should be interpreted. A study of one narrowly defined population does not automatically support conclusions about a broader population.
Exactly how scope affects broader applicability depends on the methodology. Quantitative studies may address statistical or other forms of generalizability, while qualitative research may focus more on contextual understanding and the extent to which readers can assess transferability to other settings.
Do not promise universal conclusions simply because the topic itself is universal. Conclusions should remain proportionate to the evidence and design.
Check Scope Against Feasibility
Scope and feasibility influence each other. A project may need to be narrowed because the original plan requires more participants, sites, variables, data, time, money, or expertise than are realistically available.
Narrowing can improve a project when it removes unnecessary components while preserving the primary question. It becomes harmful when the feasible version no longer produces adequate evidence.
How to narrow without weakening the study
If a population boundary is too broad
Identify the population actually required by the research question rather than choosing an arbitrary subgroup.
If there are too many outcomes or variables
Prioritize those needed for the primary question and justify secondary analyses separately.
If multiple sites make the study infeasible
Determine whether fewer sites can still address the question and acknowledge the narrower context.
If the proposed time period is unrealistic
Use a shorter period only if it still captures the phenomenon or outcome the question requires.
If narrowing removes essential evidence
Revise the research question rather than pretending the reduced study can answer the original one.
Write the Scope From the Inside Out
Once the design is sufficiently developed, you can construct the scope systematically.
1. State the central focus What specific problem, relationship, experience, phenomenon, intervention, or outcome does the study investigate?
2. Define who or what is included Identify the population, participants, cases, records, documents, or other units relevant to the question.
3. Define where and when Specify the setting and period when those boundaries matter to interpretation.
4. Define the substantive boundaries Identify the variables, concepts, outcomes, or phenomena that the study will and will not address.
5. Identify important methodological boundaries State the broad design or evidence type when it determines what the study can answer.
6. Explain consequential delimitations Briefly justify deliberate exclusions that a reasonable reader might otherwise question.
Keep the Scope Consistent Across the Entire Study
The boundaries stated in the scope should agree with the research question, objectives, methods, results, and conclusions.
If the scope says you are studying first-year students but the objective refers to all university students, the project is misaligned. If your scope specifies one outcome but the conclusions make claims about several others, you have moved beyond the study's boundaries.
Scope can legitimately change during research planning. When it does, update the connected parts of the study rather than allowing different sections of the proposal or manuscript to describe different projects.
