Is “This Is Where I Could Conduct the Study” Enough?
Researchers often conduct studies where access is possible: a university that grants permission, a hospital with available records, a nearby community, a cooperating school district, or an institution where the research team already has relationships. That is a practical reality of research.
But geography is not always merely the place where data happen to be collected. Local policies, infrastructure, socioeconomic conditions, institutional arrangements, environmental exposures, cultural practices, service systems, and other contextual characteristics may affect the phenomenon under investigation.
The methodological question is therefore not whether convenience influenced site selection. It is whether choosing that particular place could influence the evidence you obtain or the conclusions you want to draw.

The Importance of Geography Depends on What Place Does in the Study
Sometimes Location Is Mainly a Setting
Every empirical study happens somewhere, but not every research question is fundamentally about geography. A laboratory experiment may be conducted at one university because the facilities and participants are available there. A narrowly framed institutional evaluation may deliberately concern only the institution where it takes place.
In such cases, the geographic boundary may primarily define where the research was conducted. A transparent practical explanation and an appropriately bounded claim may be sufficient.
This does not make contextual information irrelevant. Readers still need enough information about the setting to understand the study. It simply means that the location itself is not being treated as the scientific explanation for the phenomenon.
Sometimes Place Is Part of the Phenomenon
Other questions cannot be separated so easily from geography. Research on implementation, environmental exposure, health-service access, educational technology adoption, disaster response, public policy, or community practices may depend on characteristics that vary across locations.
Suppose you investigate faculty adoption of generative AI at a university with extensive digital infrastructure, institution-wide AI policies, and substantial professional-development support. Those contextual conditions may shape adoption. Conducting the same study at an institution with limited connectivity and no formal AI policy could plausibly produce different patterns.
Here, location is more than an address. It represents a bundle of potentially relevant contextual conditions.
Location as practical setting
The study must occur somewhere, but geographic characteristics are not central to the question or intended inference.
Location as scientifically relevant context
Characteristics associated with place may influence the phenomenon, comparison, outcome, intervention, or applicability of the findings.
Convenience and Scientific Relevance Can Coexist
Researchers sometimes feel compelled to portray every site-selection decision as theoretically profound. That is unnecessary. A site may be selected both because it is scientifically informative and because access is feasible.
For example, a researcher may select a university because it has implemented the policy central to the research question and because institutional permission can realistically be obtained there. Both reasons can be reported.
The important distinction is between explaining why the study could be conducted there and explaining why evidence from that location is relevant to the question.
Ask What Would Happen If the Study Were Conducted Somewhere Else
A useful diagnostic is to imagine moving the study to another plausible location while keeping the basic research procedures unchanged.
Would important features of the phenomenon remain essentially the same? Or could differences in policy, infrastructure, institutional resources, population composition, environmental conditions, language, service provision, or other contextual factors plausibly alter what you observe?
If location could meaningfully alter the answer, the geographic boundary deserves substantive attention in the rationale, design, or interpretation.
A Convenient Site Does Not Automatically Represent a Wider Geography
A particularly common problem occurs when the study location is narrow but the intended claim is broad. Evidence from one accessible university does not automatically represent universities nationally. A sample from one city does not become nationally representative merely because it contains many participants.
Increasing the number of participants within one site may improve precision for some estimates. It does not create evidence about contextual variation across locations that were never studied.
Watch Out
Do not confuse a large sample within a location with broad geographic coverage. Sample size and geographic diversity answer different methodological questions.
Geographic Selection Can Shape the Evidence Itself
Location selection may also influence which cases enter the available data. Research using administrative records, electronic health records, environmental observations, or other geographically uneven data sources can be affected when some areas are systematically better represented than others.
Empirical work has shown that geographic selection or underrepresentation can affect model predictions and the transferability of findings. This means researchers should consider not only where observations are located, but also whether the mechanism that produced the available geographic data creates systematic differences.
A map with many observations is not necessarily geographically representative if those observations disproportionately come from particular kinds of places.
Administrative Boundaries Are Not Automatically Scientific Boundaries
Cities, provinces, states, school districts, regions, and national borders are convenient ways to delimit a study. Yet the process being investigated may not follow those boundaries.
Students may cross municipal boundaries to attend school. Patients may obtain healthcare outside their residential district. Environmental exposures may extend across administrative borders. Online educational platforms can connect users across countries.
If geography is substantively important, ask whether the chosen boundary corresponds reasonably to the process or population you want to study rather than merely being easy to identify.
Comparative Geographic Studies Need a Site-Selection Logic
Once locations are compared, the rationale for selecting them becomes even more consequential. An urban and rural site might be deliberately selected because the study concerns differences in infrastructure. Two jurisdictions might be chosen because they operate under different policies. Several universities might represent contrasting implementation environments.
The locations do not necessarily need to be statistically representative of every possible site. They do need to serve the comparative logic of the research question.
If sites were selected only because collaborators happened to be available, the comparison may still be useful, but the researcher should be cautious about interpreting observed differences as though they represent the entire categories to which those sites belong.
Scientific Justification Does Not Automatically Establish Generalizability
A strong reason for studying a particular location answers one question: why is this setting informative? It does not automatically answer another: where else do these findings apply?
External validity is meaningful only relative to specified populations and conditions. Findings may transfer poorly when relevant exposures, policies, populations, or contextual conditions differ across settings.
If the intended conclusions extend beyond the location studied, the target setting or population should therefore be identified explicitly. This is conceptually similar to asking when a population boundary becomes a generalizability question.
The Geographic Boundary Should Match the Research Question
If the question explicitly concerns one city, one institution, or one region, a geographically focused study may be exactly what is required. Problems emerge when the question implies a much wider population or context than the evidence can support.
In that situation, researchers have several options. They can broaden the geographic design, narrow the question and claims, or develop a defensible basis for extending the inference beyond the observed settings.
The correct choice depends on the purpose of the study. Geographic breadth is not inherently superior to contextual depth.

Check Whether Your Geographic Delimitation Needs Stronger Justification
Before finalizing the geographic scope, check:
Have I specified clearly where the study takes place and which locations are included?
Was the location selected for practical reasons, scientific reasons, or both?
Could characteristics of the location plausibly affect the phenomenon, intervention, exposure, or outcome?
Does the chosen geographic boundary correspond reasonably to the process or population being investigated?
If locations are compared, is there a clear rationale for why those particular settings provide an informative comparison?
Could the way geographic data were obtained systematically overrepresent certain places?
Have I described the contextual characteristics readers need to interpret the findings?
Do my conclusions extend beyond the geographic settings actually studied?
If they do, have I defined and justified the broader target rather than assuming geographic representativeness?
