How Do You Turn a Broad Interest Into a Researchable Topic?
You may know the general area you want to study but still have no idea what your actual research should be about. "Artificial intelligence in education," "mental health," "climate change," or "social media" can all be starting points, but they are far too broad to function as studies by themselves.
The difficult part of choosing a research topic is not simply finding something interesting. You need to identify a specific problem or uncertainty that is worth investigating and that you can realistically study with the time, data, participants, expertise, methods, and resources available to you.
This means topic selection is usually a process of refinement. You begin with an area of interest, explore what is already known, identify possible directions, and progressively narrow the scope until you have a focused study.

A Practical Process for Choosing and Narrowing a Research Topic
Start With an Area of Genuine Interest
A research topic does not need to appear fully formed. It can begin with a subject you encountered in a course, a problem you noticed in practice, an unexpected observation, a debate in your field, something you read, or a question that repeatedly makes you wonder why something happens.
Interest matters because research requires sustained attention. You may spend months or years reading about the subject, collecting and analyzing evidence, responding to problems, and writing about it. Interest alone, however, is not enough. "I find this fascinating" is a reason to explore an area, not yet a justification for conducting a particular study.
Distinguish the Subject, Topic, Problem, and Research Question
Researchers sometimes use these terms loosely, but distinguishing them can make the narrowing process much easier.
Broad subject
The general area that interests you, such as social media.
Research topic
A more specific part of that subject, such as social media use among university students.
Research problem
The particular uncertainty, issue, relationship, or knowledge gap that warrants investigation.
Research question
The focused question the study is designed to answer.
You do not always develop these in a perfectly linear order. Preliminary reading may change the problem you thought existed, and a promising research question may reveal that your topic still needs to be narrowed.
Do Preliminary Research Before You Commit
One of the most useful early steps is exploratory reading. Search relevant scholarly databases and other authoritative sources to see how researchers describe the subject, what has already been studied, which methods have been used, where findings disagree, and what limitations or unanswered questions remain.
This is not necessarily your final systematic or comprehensive literature review. At this stage, the purpose is orientation. You are trying to understand the landscape well enough to make an informed choice about where your study could fit.
Preliminary research can also prevent a common mistake: deciding on a highly specific study before discovering that the question has already been answered adequately, that the necessary data are inaccessible, or that the proposed design would be impractical.
Look for a Researchable Problem, Not Just an Understudied Topic
A useful research topic often emerges from something that remains uncertain. That uncertainty can take many forms. Previous studies may disagree. An established finding may not have been examined in a particular population or setting. A new technology or policy may create a new question. Existing evidence may rely on methods with important limitations. A theory may make predictions that have not been adequately tested.
But "few studies exist" is not automatically a compelling research gap. Sometimes little has been published because the question is unimportant, difficult to investigate meaningfully, or already answerable from existing knowledge.
Ask a stronger question: What would we understand better if this study were completed, and why would that improved understanding matter?
Narrow the Topic Along Dimensions That Actually Matter
A broad topic becomes manageable when you specify the boundaries relevant to the problem. Depending on your discipline and study, these might include the population, setting, phenomenon, exposure, intervention, comparison, outcome, time period, theoretical perspective, or particular relationship you want to examine.

Narrowing does not simply mean adding more words. Every boundary should make the study clearer or more feasible. An extremely detailed topic can still be conceptually confused, while a relatively short topic can be sharply defined.
Move From a Topic to a Question
A topic tells you what area you will investigate. A research question tells you what you want to find out about it. That difference is crucial because the question begins to determine what evidence you need and what study design could provide it.
For example, "remote work and employee well-being" is a topic. You could ask whether two variables are associated, how workers experience a particular arrangement, why an observed pattern occurs, how an intervention changes an outcome, or how a phenomenon differs between contexts. Those are different studies even though they share the same general topic.
A useful research question is clear and sufficiently focused to be answered through an appropriate investigation. In many fields, it should require analysis rather than merely retrieving an easily available fact.
Test the Idea for Feasibility Early
A fascinating question can still be a poor choice for your particular project if you cannot answer it responsibly. Feasibility should therefore influence topic selection from the beginning rather than being checked after the study has been designed.
Consider the practical requirements implied by your question. Can you reach the population? Can you obtain enough appropriate data? Do you have the necessary expertise, equipment, software, facilities, funding, and time? Is the scope appropriate for a course project, thesis, dissertation, grant, or larger research program?
The widely used FINER framework offers a useful way to evaluate a developing research question: Feasible, Interesting, Novel, Ethical, and Relevant. Novelty does not necessarily mean nobody has ever studied anything similar. Research can add value by confirming, challenging, extending, or applying previous findings in a justified way.

If the topic is interesting but enormous
Narrow the population, problem, context, phenomenon, relationship, or outcome rather than trying to cover the entire field.
If the topic is focused but you do not know why it matters
Read further and identify what uncertainty the study would resolve and who could use the resulting knowledge.
If the question is worthwhile but impossible with your resources
Reduce the scope, reconsider the design, identify accessible data, seek appropriate collaboration, or choose another question.
If the topic is interesting, focused, worthwhile, ethical, and feasible
Develop the research question and investigate the literature more thoroughly before finalizing the study design.
Let Feasibility Shape Scope Without Letting Convenience Define the Question
There is a balance to strike. A study has to be achievable, but choosing a topic only because a dataset or participant group is convenient can leave you with a weak question. Conversely, choosing the most ambitious possible question can produce a project that never reaches completion.
A better approach is to work back and forth between intellectual value and practical constraints. Ask what question is worth answering, then what version of that question you can answer convincingly with the resources available.
Expect the Topic to Change as You Learn More
Refining your topic is not evidence that your original idea failed. It is part of research planning. Literature searches can expose assumptions, reveal better terminology, identify previously unknown evidence, or show that a proposed question needs to be broadened, narrowed, or redirected.
The goal is not to defend your first idea. It is to develop the strongest study you can from the problem that originally caught your attention.

Narrowing a Broad Interest in Generative AI
Suppose a graduate student is interested in generative artificial intelligence in higher education. "The impact of AI on education" initially sounds like a topic, but it contains many possible populations, technologies, behaviors, outcomes, settings, and research questions.
1. Start with the broad interest The researcher begins with generative AI in higher education.
2. Explore the literature Preliminary reading identifies several possible directions, including student writing, assessment, academic integrity, learning strategies, instructor practices, and student attitudes.
3. Choose a specific problem The researcher becomes interested in how students use generative AI while completing academic writing tasks rather than trying to study the overall "impact" of AI.
4. Define meaningful boundaries The project is limited to an accessible student population, a defined type of academic writing activity, and a particular aspect of AI use that can be investigated with an appropriate method.
5. Test feasibility The researcher checks whether participants can be recruited, whether the required evidence can be collected ethically, whether the project fits the available timeframe, and whether the planned analysis is within the researcher's expertise.
6. Develop the research question Only after those decisions does the researcher formulate a precise question aligned with the population, phenomenon, evidence, and intended study design.
The important lesson is that narrowing occurred through substantive decisions, not simply by making the title longer. Each step removed possibilities until the proposed study had a defined purpose and realistic boundaries.
06 · What This Means for You
How to Decide Whether You Have Found the Right Research Topic
You do not need to wait for a perfect idea. You need a defensible one: a topic you care enough about to investigate, grounded in what is already known, focused on a meaningful uncertainty, and realistic for the research you can actually conduct.
Before committing, try explaining your proposed study in a few sentences. State what you want to investigate, who or what you will study, what you want to learn, why the answer matters, and why you believe the project is feasible. If one of those pieces remains vague, that is usually where more refinement is needed.
Watch Out
Do not confuse specificity with quality. Adding a location, age range, institution, date, or demographic characteristic makes a topic narrower, but those restrictions should have a methodological, theoretical, practical, or feasibility rationale. Arbitrary narrowing can produce a highly specific study with little meaningful contribution.
Finally, treat topic selection as iterative. Move between your question, the literature, available methods, ethical considerations, and practical constraints. A promising topic becomes a strong research project when these pieces begin to fit together.

The project appears achievable within my available time, budget, expertise, facilities, and other resources.
I have considered whether the study can be conducted ethically rather than postponing ethical questions until later.
I am willing to revise or abandon the current version if deeper reading shows that another question would be stronger.
