How Much Should You Verify Before You Commit to a Research Question?
You have identified a strong research question. The method appears appropriate. The project seems manageable. There is only one complication: an essential part of the plan depends on something you do not yet know you can obtain.
Perhaps you expect a hospital to provide records, a school to permit recruitment, a laboratory to make equipment available, or a specialist to help with the analysis. Should you commit to the research question first and solve those details later?
Sometimes preliminary uncertainty is unavoidable. But when the study depends on a resource that has no realistic substitute, treating hoped-for access as established feasibility can create a preventable problem. The more indispensable the resource, the stronger the case for verification before the research question becomes difficult or costly to change.
03 · What You Need to Know
Commitment Should Follow the Evidence Needed for Feasibility
A research question is not chosen in a vacuum. Its feasibility depends on the design required to answer it and the conditions under which that design must operate. Time, expertise, participant availability, data access, facilities, equipment, funding, permissions, and institutional support can all influence whether a question can be investigated in practice.
The key is proportionality. You do not need every logistical detail finalized before deciding that a research question is worth pursuing. But you should avoid treating an indispensable and uncertain resource as though access were already guaranteed.
First Identify What Is Actually Critical
Verification begins with dependency analysis. Ask what your study cannot proceed without.
If your preferred reference manager becomes unavailable, another tool may work. If one interview room cannot be booked, another suitable location may be found. If your preferred statistical package is unavailable, equivalent analysis may sometimes be conducted using other software.
Those resources matter, but they may not determine whether the research question survives.
By contrast, a study examining a proprietary dataset may depend entirely on obtaining that dataset. A laboratory study may depend on access to a specialized instrument. Research involving a narrowly defined population may depend on permission from the only realistic recruitment setting.
Identifying the resource the study cannot proceed without helps determine where verification effort should be concentrated.
Verification Is Stronger Than Availability
Researchers sometimes move too quickly from “the resource exists” to “the study is feasible.” Several different claims are hidden in that jump.

Operational risks that may still arise later
Not every project needs to reach the final level before the research question can be selected. Some permissions, particularly ethics or governance approvals, may depend on having a sufficiently developed protocol first. The objective is not to demand impossible certainty. It is to obtain enough evidence to justify treating the dependency as realistically available.
Verification Means Different Things for Different Resources
There is no universal document called “proof of feasibility.” The evidence you need depends on the resource.
Participants: Determine whether the accessible population is sufficiently large and whether recruitment through the proposed pathway is realistic.
Existing data: Confirm that the dataset contains the variables, population, observations, time period, and level of detail needed for the study, as well as a legitimate pathway to access.
Equipment or facilities: Confirm technical suitability, scheduling conditions, access requirements, costs, and availability during the required period.
Software or services: Check licensing, functionality, institutional access, cost, and whether access will remain available through analysis.
Expertise: Establish whether the necessary expertise exists within the team or whether suitable support can realistically be obtained.
External organizations: Identify who actually has authority to permit the proposed activity and what formal processes must be completed.
For institutional infrastructure, this may require more than checking a website or equipment list. You need to determine whether your institution has the facilities or resources your particular study requires under conditions that make them usable for your project.
Match the Strength of Verification to the Consequence of Failure
A useful rule is simple: the harder a resource is to replace, the more carefully it should be verified.

This approach prevents two opposite errors. One is under-verification, where researchers commit to a study on the basis of assumptions that later collapse. The other is over-verification, where researchers attempt to finalize every logistical detail before they have even determined whether the research question deserves development.
Some Resources Cannot Be Fully Secured Before the Protocol Exists
The phrase “verify before committing” should not be interpreted mechanically. Research processes often have dependencies of their own. Formal ethics approval, for example, normally requires a developed protocol. An external organization may request ethics approval before authorizing data collection. A data custodian may require documentation that cannot be produced at the idea stage.
In such situations, verification means establishing the pathway and its plausibility rather than pretending final authorization can be obtained prematurely.
You might confirm that your proposed use falls within the organization's application process, determine eligibility requirements, identify likely timelines, ask whether comparable projects have been permitted, and establish whether any obvious barrier makes access unrealistic. That is more defensible than simply assuming approval will arrive later.
Watch Out
Do not confuse preliminary feasibility verification with permission to begin research. Informal discussions, feasibility inquiries, or confirmation that access may be possible do not replace ethics approval, institutional authorization, informed consent, data-governance requirements, or other permissions applicable to the eventual study.
Verify Suitability, Not Merely Access
A resource can be available and still be useless for the research question.
Suppose a university grants access to a dataset. That solves only one problem. You still need to know whether the data contain the required variables, whether those variables were measured in a way compatible with your question, whether the population fits your intended scope, and whether there are enough usable observations.
The same applies to equipment. Access to a laboratory instrument does not establish that its specifications meet the measurement requirements of the study. Access to a statistician does not guarantee that the person has expertise in the particular method you need.
Verification therefore has at least two dimensions: Can I access the resource? and Can this resource actually do what my study requires?
Verify Timing as Well as Availability
A resource available next year may be functionally unavailable to a thesis due in six months.
Ask when access can begin, how frequently the resource can be used, whether queues or booking restrictions apply, how long approvals typically take, and whether the resource will remain available throughout the period in which you need it.
This is particularly important when evaluating whether the project can be completed within the actual deadline . Feasibility is temporal. “Available eventually” and “available when the study requires it” are not equivalent.
Verification Can Reveal a Better Research Question
Checking resources before commitment is not merely defensive. It can improve study design.
You may discover that a dataset contains richer variables than expected, that a laboratory offers a more appropriate measurement technique, or that a recruitment partner can provide access to a population better aligned with the phenomenon you want to study. Feasibility information can therefore shape the research question rather than merely approve or reject it.
Conversely, if verification reveals that the ideal design is beyond available resources, you can decide whether an alternative represents a defensible version of the study that is realistically possible or whether simplification would compromise the question too severely.
04 · A Practical Example
Checking a Dataset Before Building a Thesis Around It
Hypothetical Example
A thesis based on an institutional student dataset
A graduate researcher wants to examine whether patterns of engagement in a university's learning management system are associated with subsequent academic performance. The proposed design depends on institutional learning analytics and student outcome data.
Identify the critical resource The project depends on access to linkable learning-management and academic-performance data. Without suitable data, the proposed analysis cannot be conducted as intended.
Check existence The researcher confirms that both systems retain relevant records. This is useful, but it does not yet establish feasibility.
Check suitability The researcher determines which engagement indicators are actually recorded, how far back records extend, whether outcome variables are available, and whether records can be linked appropriately under institutional data-governance requirements.
Check the access pathway The researcher identifies the responsible data office, the required approvals, expected processing time, and restrictions governing extraction and analysis.
Decide how firmly to commit If the necessary data and a realistic access pathway are confirmed, the question has stronger feasibility support. If a central variable does not exist or linkage is prohibited, the researcher can revise the question before building the entire thesis around unavailable evidence.
Notice that verification does not require downloading identifiable student records during preliminary planning. The researcher needs enough legitimate information about data existence, suitability, governance, and access to judge whether the proposed question has a realistic empirical path.
06 · What This Means for You
Verify Enough to Make an Evidence-Based Commitment
Before committing firmly to a research question, list the resources that the likely design requires and ask what would happen if each were unavailable. You do not need equal evidence for all of them.
A simple decision framework
If the resource is easy to replace
Basic confirmation may be sufficient during early planning.
If losing the resource would create substantial delay or cost
Verify access conditions, timing, suitability, and realistic alternatives.
If losing the resource would force a major redesign
Seek stronger evidence before firmly committing to the research question.
If the resource has no realistic substitute and access remains highly uncertain
Resolve the uncertainty where possible, conduct a targeted feasibility check, or reconsider committing to the current design.
Where verification is impossible before formal approval, document what remains uncertain and what evidence supports your expectation that access will eventually be granted. This keeps the feasibility plan intellectually honest.
Most importantly, do not ask only, “Do I think I can get this?” Ask, “What evidence do I currently have that I can get this, under the conditions and within the timeframe my study requires?” That small change in wording is often enough to expose the difference between an evidence-based plan and a hopeful one.

Before committing to the research question, check:
Identify which resources are indispensable to the likely research design.
Ask whether each critical resource has a realistic substitute if access fails.
Confirm that the resource is technically or methodologically suitable for what the study requires.
Identify who controls access and what formal process must be completed.
Distinguish informal assurance from authorization or other stronger evidence of access.
Check expected approval, booking, procurement, or access timelines against the project deadline.
Determine whether access must remain continuous or recurring throughout the study.
Identify any critical assumptions that remain unverified even after confirming that the resource exists.
Use a targeted feasibility check when an indispensable uncertainty cannot be resolved through documentation or confirmation alone.
