How Do You Find Research That Your Keyword Search Missed? A Guide to Citation Chaining

Keyword searches do not always find every relevant paper. Citation chaining lets you follow references backward and citations forward from useful papers to uncover research your original search may have missed.

01 · The Question

What if the right papers never appear in your keyword search?

You can build a careful database search, try several combinations of keywords, and still miss relevant research. The problem is not necessarily that your search was poor. Researchers may describe the same concept with different terminology, terminology can change over time, and some relevant records may not contain the words you expected in their titles or abstracts.

Once you have found one genuinely relevant paper, however, you have another way to search. Instead of asking a database to match your words, you can follow the paper's connections to other research.

This approach is commonly called citation searching, citation chaining, or sometimes citation chasing. It can help you find earlier work that your paper cited and later work that cited your paper. In some searches, those citation relationships reveal studies that keyword searching did not.

Backward searching examines what those papers cited; forward searching identifies later publications that cite them. Citation chaining is usually best treated as a complement to a well-designed literature search, not an automatic replacement for one.

How citation chaining helps you search beyond keywords

What is citation chaining?

A scholarly paper sits inside a network of citations. It points backward to earlier publications through its reference list. After publication, other papers may point forward to it by citing it.

Citation chaining uses those relationships to discover potentially relevant literature. You begin with one or more useful papers, often called seed papers or seed references, and explore the literature connected to them.

Backward citation searching Look through the references cited by a seed paper to identify potentially relevant earlier work.
Forward citation searching Find later publications that cite the seed paper, usually through a citation database or scholarly search engine.

These directions answer different questions. Backward searching asks, "What earlier research helped lead to this paper?" Forward searching asks, "What happened in the literature after this paper appeared?"

Why can keyword searching miss relevant papers?

Keyword searching depends on language. You have to anticipate the terminology that authors, indexers, and databases use for the concepts you want to find.

That can become difficult when a field has inconsistent terminology, when an idea has acquired a different name over time, when several disciplines discuss similar concepts using different vocabulary, or when the concept you care about is not prominent in the title or abstract.

Citation searching works differently. The connection between two papers is based on a citation relationship rather than on whether both records happen to contain your search terms. This is one reason citation searching can be particularly useful as a supplementary method for topics that are difficult to capture with text-based searches. Guidance from the TARCiS statement recommends seriously considering backward and forward citation searching for systematic search topics that are difficult to search using terminology alone.

How do you do backward citation searching?

Start with a paper that is clearly relevant to your question. Open its reference list and screen the cited publications for promising titles, authors, concepts, methods, or studies.

You do not need to read every cited paper. Treat the reference list as another set of search results. Identify potentially relevant references, retrieve them, and evaluate them using the same inclusion, relevance, and quality considerations you would apply to literature found through a database search.

Backward citation searching is especially useful for tracing the intellectual or empirical foundations of a paper. A recent article may lead you to earlier studies, measurement instruments, methodological papers, theoretical work, or previous reviews that did not appear prominently in your original search.

How do you do forward citation searching?

Forward citation searching reverses the direction. Instead of asking what the seed paper cited, you ask which later publications have cited the seed paper.

Citation indexes and scholarly search systems can provide this functionality. Google Scholar, for example, provides a "Cited by" link for many records. Citation databases such as Web of Science and Scopus also support citation-based searching.

Forward searching can be particularly useful when your seed paper is older. It lets you see how subsequent researchers used, tested, criticized, replicated, extended, or otherwise engaged with that work.

A citation is only a lead, however. A later paper may cite your seed paper for a minor methodological point, background statement, criticism, or reason unrelated to your research question. Every result still needs to be screened for relevance.

What makes a good seed paper?

Citation chaining is only as useful as the papers from which you begin. A poor starting paper can send you through a largely irrelevant part of the citation network.

Useful seed papers are usually publications you already know are closely related to your research question. Depending on your purpose, these might include a particularly relevant empirical study, a key methodological paper, a major earlier study, or a relevant review.

You do not have to choose only highly cited papers. Citation count and relevance are different things. A less-cited paper that closely matches your population, phenomenon, method, or research question may be a much better seed than a famous paper with only a loose connection to your study.

Should you chain from one paper or several?

Usually, several well-chosen seed papers are safer than relying on a single one. Every paper occupies only part of a research literature. Starting from one paper can disproportionately expose you to the authors, theories, methods, and citation traditions surrounding that particular work.

Using seed papers that represent different authors, time periods, approaches, or disciplinary perspectives can help you explore more than one part of the literature.

Can you keep following citations from papers you discover?

Yes. Suppose Paper A leads you backward to Paper B, and Paper B turns out to be highly relevant. You can examine B's references and its citing papers as well. This iterative process is sometimes described as snowballing.

That does not mean you should follow every citation indefinitely. Citation networks expand quickly. Continue selectively, using your research question and relevance criteria to decide which newly discovered papers deserve further chaining.

Watch Out

Citation chaining can create a path-dependent search: the papers you discover depend partly on where you started. Do not assume that repeatedly following one citation trail gives you a complete picture of the literature.

Are backward and forward citation results identical across databases?

No. Citation systems differ in the publications and document types they index, their coverage across disciplines and years, and how they construct citation links. As a result, the papers shown as citing a particular article can differ among Google Scholar, Scopus, Web of Science, and other sources.

For an ordinary literature review, you may not need to compare every citation database. For a systematic or otherwise highly comprehensive search, database choice, documentation, reproducibility, and coverage deserve more deliberate attention.

Is citation chaining enough for a literature search?

Usually not. Citation searching has a different strength from keyword searching, but it also has different weaknesses.

The methods therefore complement one another. Keyword searching can give you candidate papers across a topic. Citation chaining can then explore relationships around particularly relevant papers and potentially expose literature your terminology-based search did not retrieve.

When does citation searching need to be documented formally?

If you are casually exploring literature for your own understanding, detailed documentation may be unnecessary. If you are conducting a systematic review, scoping review, or another evidence synthesis intended to use a transparent and reproducible search process, the standard is different.

PRISMA-S specifically addresses citation searching. It recommends reporting whether cited references or citing references were examined and describing the methods used to locate them. It also calls for identifying the seed references on which citation searching was performed and the relevant citation database or method.

In other words, "we also checked citations" may not provide enough detail for a rigorous evidence synthesis. Record what you searched, where you searched it, which seed papers you used, and how the process was conducted.

04 · A Practical Example

How one relevant paper can reveal literature your keywords missed

Hypothetical Example

Your database search finds a highly relevant study

Imagine you are researching how university students manage interruptions from smartphone notifications while studying. You create a database search using terms such as "smartphone notifications," "interruptions," "attention," and "university students."

After screening the results, you find a paper that closely matches your question. Instead of treating that paper only as something to cite, you use it as a seed paper.

1. Search backward You examine the paper's reference list and notice an older study about "mobile communication interruptions." Your original query did not use that terminology, so the study had not appeared prominently in your results.
2. Evaluate the older paper You retrieve it and determine that it is relevant. Its terminology also gives you additional search terms that may improve your database search.
3. Search forward You use a citation-searching service to identify papers that cite your original seed paper. A later study examines "notification-driven task switching," another phrase absent from your initial query.
4. Follow only promising branches You screen the new papers rather than automatically accepting them. The relevant ones can become additional seed papers; irrelevant citation trails stop there.
5. Revisit the keyword search You add useful terminology discovered through citation chaining to your search strategy and check whether those terms reveal additional records.

The important point is not that citation chaining magically finds everything. It gives you a second discovery mechanism. Your initial search depended on predicting the language used in the literature; citation chaining exposed useful connections that did not depend on matching your original wording.

05 · What Researchers Often Get Wrong

Common mistakes when following citation trails

Misconception

If a paper cites my seed paper, it must be relevant

A citation establishes a connection, not relevance to your particular research question. Papers cite other publications for many reasons. Treat forward-citation results as candidates that still require screening.

Misconception

The most highly cited paper is always the best seed

High citation counts can reflect age, field size, methodological importance, controversy, or many other factors. For citation chaining, close relevance to your question is usually more useful than citation count alone.

Misconception

Checking the reference list is enough

Backward searching only reveals work that existed and was cited when the seed paper was written. If you want to trace later developments, you also need forward citation searching.

Misconception

Citation chaining can replace a proper database search

Not generally. Citation chaining depends on your starting papers and on citation relationships among publications. A sound keyword or subject-based search can reach literature outside those initial citation neighborhoods. The methods are usually stronger together.

Misconception

If citation chaining keeps finding papers, you have to follow all of them

Citation networks can expand almost indefinitely. Use relevance criteria. Follow branches that continue to produce useful literature and stop pursuing branches that repeatedly lead away from your question.

One seed paper gives you an unbiased map of the field

A single paper reflects a particular place in the literature. Its authors may work within one discipline, theory, method, or scholarly community. Using several relevant seeds can reduce your dependence on one citation trail, although it does not guarantee complete coverage.

Build citation chaining into your literature-search workflow

Do not wait until the end of your literature review and then randomly browse reference lists. Citation chaining is more useful when it becomes a deliberate extension of your search.

A simple citation-chaining workflow

If you have not yet found clearly relevant papers
Keep improving your keyword and database search first. Citation chaining needs useful seed papers.
If you find a highly relevant paper
Check its references for earlier work and run a forward citation search for later work.
If citation chaining reveals unfamiliar terminology
Use those terms to improve or rerun your keyword search rather than keeping the two methods separate.
If one citation trail keeps returning the same authors or perspective
Use additional seed papers and search strategies to explore other parts of the literature.
If you are conducting a systematic evidence synthesis
Predefine and document the citation-searching method as appropriate for your review, including the seed references, sources used, dates, and procedures required for transparent reporting.

The most productive workflow is often iterative. Keyword searching finds useful papers. Those papers reveal citations and new terminology. Citation chaining identifies more papers. Those papers, in turn, may suggest better search terms or additional seed references.

You are no longer relying on one perfect search query. You are learning from the literature as you search it.

Before you finish your literature search, check the citation trails

For each particularly useful seed paper, check:
Have I examined its reference list for potentially relevant earlier research?
Have I checked which later publications cite it when forward citation searching is useful?
Am I screening citation results for actual relevance rather than assuming every connected paper belongs in my review?
Have citation trails revealed alternative terminology that I should add to my database search?
Am I using more than one seed paper when relying heavily on citation chaining?
Have I stopped following citation branches that repeatedly produce irrelevant material?
If this is a systematic evidence synthesis, have I recorded the seed references, citation sources, search dates, and methods needed for transparent reporting?

Frequently asked questions about citation chaining

What is another name for citation chaining?

You may encounter terms such as citation searching, citation chasing, citation tracking, and snowballing. Terminology varies, and some terms refer to more specific procedures. Backward citation searching means examining references cited by a seed paper; forward citation searching means identifying later publications that cite it.

Can I do citation chaining in Google Scholar?

Yes. You can inspect a paper's reference list for backward searching and use Google Scholar's "Cited by" feature for forward searching. Google Scholar also offers "Related articles." For rigorous evidence synthesis, consider the coverage, reproducibility, and reporting requirements of the search tools you use.

Can I do forward citation searching in Scopus or Web of Science?

Yes. Both are citation databases that support following citations to identify later documents that cite a selected record. Exact coverage and results can differ between databases.

How many seed papers should I use?

There is no universal number that works for every literature search. Choose seed papers because they are highly relevant to your question, not to reach an arbitrary count. Using multiple seeds can help you avoid depending too heavily on the citation network surrounding a single publication.

Should I citation-chain every paper I find?

Not necessarily. For an ordinary literature search, concentrate on papers likely to open useful citation trails. Systematic reviews and other formal evidence syntheses may require a more predefined and consistently applied procedure.

Is citation chaining the same as finding related articles?

Not exactly. Direct citation searching follows explicit citing or cited relationships. "Related articles" features may use other relationships or proprietary similarity algorithms. They can be useful discovery tools, but the mechanism is not necessarily the same as direct backward or forward citation searching.

When is citation chaining especially useful?

It can be particularly useful when terminology is inconsistent or difficult to specify, when you want to trace earlier foundations or later developments, or when a highly relevant paper suggests that your keyword search has not captured the full literature surrounding the question.

If keyword searching finds a few strong papers but you suspect relevant research is still missing, follow the citation network.

Search backward through the references and forward through papers that cite your strongest seed studies. Citation chaining can uncover literature that uses terminology you did not anticipate, but it should usually complement rather than replace a well-designed database search.
