A practical method for finding foundational and influential research
First, decide what you mean by an “important” paper
Researchers sometimes use several labels as though they were interchangeable. They are not always describing exactly the same thing.
Seminal or foundational paper
A work regarded as having introduced, established, or substantially shaped an important idea, theory, method, finding, or research direction.
Highly cited paper
A work that has accumulated many citations within a particular citation source. High citation activity may indicate influence, but it does not by itself establish that the paper was foundational or that its conclusions remain accepted.
A paper can be important for several different reasons. It may have introduced a theory, developed an instrument, proposed a statistical technique, reported an influential experiment, created a dataset, established terminology, or fundamentally challenged previous work.
Before searching, therefore, ask what kind of importance you are trying to identify.
Step 1: Begin with a normal literature search
Do not begin by sorting an entire database by citation count.
First establish the boundaries and terminology of the topic using a conventional literature search. Search appropriate databases with the concepts, synonyms, subject terms, and search logic relevant to your question.
If you need to refine the queries themselves, use concepts, synonyms, subject terms, and search logic to build them.
Your initial goal is to find a small set of highly relevant papers that can serve as entry points into the literature.
Step 2: Look for recent authoritative review articles
A strong review article can give you something a raw search-result list cannot: an interpreted history of the field.
Look for recent systematic reviews, scoping reviews, meta-analyses, authoritative narrative reviews, or field overviews relevant to your question. Read their introductions and background sections carefully.
Watch for statements such as:
- a theory was originally proposed by particular authors;
- a method was first introduced in a particular study;
- a landmark experiment changed understanding of a phenomenon;
- a particular scale or instrument was developed in an earlier paper;
- subsequent research grew from an influential model; or
- an older finding became the basis of a continuing debate.
Then inspect the references attached to those claims.
Do not assume that the review's citation is necessarily the true origin of the idea. Researchers sometimes cite a convenient later source rather than the earliest or original work. Treat the cited paper as a candidate and verify its role.
Step 3: Look for papers that are repeatedly cited across independent sources
One review can reflect one author's interpretation of the field. Repetition across several independent sources is more informative.
If multiple recent reviews and research papers repeatedly cite the same older work when explaining a central theory, method, or finding, that paper deserves investigation.
You can create a simple candidate list containing:
- paper title;
- authors;
- publication year;
- what later authors say the paper contributed;
- which sources identify or cite it as important; and
- its citation information where useful.
The objective is not to count mentions mechanically. You are looking for convergence: do researchers working independently repeatedly return to the same source when explaining how the field developed?
Step 4: Read the candidate paper itself
This step is easy to skip and difficult to replace.
Do not call a paper seminal merely because other authors call it seminal. Read enough of the original work to determine what it actually did.
Ask:
- What question did the paper address?
- What idea, method, evidence, or framework did it introduce?
- Was that contribution genuinely new at the time?
- Does the paper itself acknowledge earlier work that deserves credit?
- What claims did the authors actually make?
- How does the original claim differ from the way later researchers describe it?
This is especially important when an idea has become simplified through repeated citation. The famous paper may have popularized a concept without originating it.
Step 5: Search backward through the references
Once you have a strong candidate paper, examine its reference list. This is backward citation searching.
Backward searching asks a simple question: What earlier research did this paper build on?
Citation-searching guidance defines backward citation searching as inspecting the references cited by a seed paper. Because it does not depend on guessing the same terminology used by earlier authors, it can uncover relevant literature that a keyword search missed.
Pay particular attention when the candidate paper says that an earlier study:
- first proposed the idea;
- developed the original method;
- provided the initial evidence;
- introduced the terminology;
- created the instrument or dataset; or
- established the theoretical foundation.
You may discover that the paper you initially thought was seminal is actually one step downstream from the real foundational work.
Step 6: Search forward to see what happened afterward
Backward searching reconstructs where a paper came from. Forward citation searching shows where it went.
Forward citation searching identifies later works that cite the seed paper. Citation indexes make this possible at scale. Web of Science, for example, provides a Cited Reference Search specifically for locating records that cite a published work and examining how an idea or innovation was subsequently confirmed, applied, improved, extended, or corrected.
Forward searching can reveal whether a candidate paper:
- generated a large subsequent research program;
- was replicated;
- was extended into other populations or settings;
- became the basis of a method;
- triggered a theoretical debate;
- was later challenged or corrected; or
- remains actively cited in contemporary research.
Scopus, Web of Science, and Google Scholar can all support forms of citation discovery, although their coverage and citation counts differ.
Step 7: Follow the citation chain in both directions
Do not stop after one generation.
A useful pattern is:
recent relevant paper → influential earlier paper → its foundational references → later papers citing it
This process is sometimes described as citation chasing or snowballing. Citation-based retrieval can identify studies that terminology-based database searches miss because the relevant papers use unexpected or changing vocabulary. Cochrane's search guidance notes this particular advantage of citation searching.
You will often begin to see a network emerge: a small number of older works feeding into major developments, followed by branches of later research.
Step 8: Search for the authors as well as the papers
Important ideas are often developed across a series of publications rather than appearing fully formed in one article.
Once you identify a candidate seminal paper, examine the authors' related work before and after it. An earlier article may contain the original idea, while the famous later article may be the one that became widely cited.
Author searching can also help distinguish similarly named researchers and reveal related papers that use different terminology from your original search.
Do not assume that the most famous paper by an influential researcher is necessarily the one most relevant to your specific question.
Step 9: Use citation counts carefully
Citation counts are useful signals because sustained citation activity can indicate that a paper has become part of an ongoing scholarly conversation.
But a citation count does not tell you why a paper was cited.
A paper may accumulate citations because it:
- introduced an influential idea;
- provides a widely used method or measurement scale;
- is routinely cited for background information;
- is controversial;
- has been criticized;
- is unusually old and has had decades to accumulate citations; or
- belongs to a field with high publication and citation rates.
Watch Out
Do not define “seminal” as “the paper with the highest citation count.” Citation counts depend on the citation database and its coverage, accumulate over time, and do not reveal whether citations support, criticize, extend, or merely mention a work. Use citation data to identify candidates, then investigate their intellectual contribution.
Step 10: Account for the age of the paper
Older papers have had more time to accumulate citations. Recently published research has not.
This creates an obvious problem if you rank everything by raw citation count. A transformative paper published two years ago may have fewer citations than a routine methodological paper published thirty years ago.
For genuinely recent developments, look beyond total citations. Examine whether the work is being rapidly discussed, replicated, extended, challenged, incorporated into reviews, or adopted methodologically.
The term seminal may also be premature for very recent work. Historical influence becomes easier to assess after a field has had time to respond.
Step 11: Separate foundational theory from pivotal empirical evidence
A field may not have one seminal paper.
For the same research topic, you may need different kinds of key sources:

Thinking in categories prevents you from searching for a single “most important paper” when the intellectual history is actually distributed across several contributions.
Step 12: Look at the citation context, not just the citation
If a later paper cites your candidate seminal study, examine the sentence or paragraph surrounding the citation when possible.
There is an important difference between:
- “Smith introduced the first model of…”;
- “We use the method developed by Smith…”;
- “Smith reported an influential finding, but later evidence has questioned…”; and
- a citation appearing among twenty references attached to a general background statement.
The citation context tells you what role later researchers believe the paper plays.
Repeated substantive descriptions across independent papers are stronger evidence of foundational influence than a large number of superficial mentions.
Step 13: Ask knowledgeable researchers, but verify their suggestions
Experts can identify influential works that are difficult to discover through ranking algorithms, especially in fields where books, monographs, reports, older literature, or non-English scholarship matter.
A supervisor or experienced researcher may immediately recognize the paper that introduced a method or changed a debate.
Expert recommendations are valuable starting points, not substitutes for verification. Researchers can favor the literature they were trained on, their own intellectual tradition, or papers that are especially prominent in one subfield.
If an expert identifies a paper as foundational, ask what made it foundational and then trace the surrounding literature yourself.
Step 14: Know when you have found the core literature
As you repeat keyword searching, review mining, backward citation searching, forward citation searching, and author searching, the same works will often begin to recur.
You may notice that:
- multiple reviews identify the same foundational sources;
- reference lists repeatedly lead to the same older papers;
- forward citation searches reveal recognizable branches of later work;
- new searches mostly return studies you have already encountered; and
- you can explain how the major theories, methods, and findings developed over time.
This convergence is more meaningful than reaching an arbitrary number of papers.
It also gives you something more useful than a reading list: a working map of the field.
