Inspiring Graduates for the AI Era: My Commencement Speech at STI College Pasay Edsa

Being invited to speak at the STI Tertiary Commencement Exercise last Friday (August 18, 2023) was an incredible moment for me. Having been part of the STI community from 2013 to 2018, it felt like coming back to a place that had played a significant role in my journey. Standing in front of the graduates as a former information technology instructor and department head, I was reminded of the remarkable growth and transformation the institution had undergone.

The journey came full circle when, on April 13, I was honored with the 2023 Distinguished Alumni Award. It was heartwarming to be recognized for my contributions to the institution that had contributed so much to my professional development. This recognition added an extra layer of significance to my role as the guest of honor and commencement speaker. As I addressed the graduates, I couldn't help but share this personal connection. Reflecting on my time as a former faculty and the honor I received, I emphasized that the bond between STI and myself had deepened over the years. It was a testament to the institution's commitment to nurturing its community members even after they move on to new chapters in their lives.

In my speech, I centered my message around a topic that resonates deeply in today's world — the importance of staying relevant in the era of Artificial Intelligence. I believed this was a critical theme given the rapid advancements in technology that are reshaping industries and professions, much like the incredible capabilities of ChatGPT.

Drawing from my own experiences and observations, I wanted to guide the graduates on a path that would ensure their continued relevance and worth in the evolving landscape. Just as ChatGPT exemplifies the power of AI to adapt and provide valuable insights, the graduates too must harness their own adaptability and insights to thrive in this dynamic environment. The heart of my message also encompassed three essential tips: Stay Curious, Take Initiative, and Invest in Skills. Just like the acronym "STI" that represents the institution, these tips would serve as guiding principles for the graduates as they embarked on their journey into the AI era.

  1. Stay Curious: Drawing parallels between their learning journey and the way AI systems like ChatGPT operate, I encouraged the graduates to approach life with a sense of curiosity. Just as they were eager to explore new subjects during their time at STI, they should continue to ask questions, seek new knowledge, and remain open to the ever-evolving landscape of technology.
  2. Take Initiative: I shared personal anecdotes from my time at STI to emphasize the importance of seizing opportunities. Just as I had seen the institution grow and evolve, the graduates too should be proactive in their pursuits. Taking initiative, proposing ideas, and making things happen are vital steps in staying ahead in a world driven by AI innovation.
  3. Invest in Skills: Reflecting on the knowledge and skills they acquired during their studies, I highlighted the significance of lifelong learning. The way AI systems continuously learn and improve corresponds to the graduates' need to continually invest in acquiring new skills and adapting to changes in the professional landscape.

As I wrapped up my speech, I encouraged the graduates to approach their future with both determination and humor. I led them in a light-hearted pledge:

"I pledge to stay so savvy and bright,
AI won't replace me without a good fight.
Tubig is water, ilog is river
combine it together, I love you forever"

Sharing my personal journey and connection with STI College Pasay Edsa, as well as intertwining it with the ever-relevant theme of staying worth in the AI era, made the speech more relatable and meaningful. It was a wonderful experience to engage with the graduates and inspire them to embrace the challenges and opportunities presented by the AI era, much like the institution had done for me. Thank you once again to everyone who made this day possible, and to the graduating class of 2023, I wish you all the success, happiness, and fulfillment that the future holds.
