Educational guidanceA final hypothesis should be grounded in theory, prior evidence, measurable variables, a defined population, and an appropriate study design.

A hypothesis should match the claim you intend to test

Good hypotheses connect theory, variables, population, direction, and design.

A study comparing groups needs a different hypothesis from one examining association, prediction, mediation, moderation, equivalence, or noninferiority. Exploratory and qualitative studies may instead use research questions or propositions.

The selector provides a reusable hypothesis structure, but you should replace placeholders with the actual variables, population, groups, and expected direction in your study.

Before finalizing a hypothesis

  • Name the population. Specify the people, organizations, records, or settings to which the claim applies.
  • Operationalize the variables. Explain how each construct will be measured or manipulated.
  • Justify direction. Use theory or previous evidence rather than guessing.
  • Match the design. Avoid causal wording when the design only supports association.
  • Define margins in advance. Equivalence and noninferiority require substantively justified thresholds.

Not every study needs a formal hypothesis

Descriptive studies may focus on estimating prevalence, means, distributions, or patterns. Exploratory studies may investigate an emerging topic without committing to a confirmatory claim. Many qualitative studies use research questions because the goal is interpretation, meaning, or theory development.

A hypothesis should not be added merely to make a study appear more scientific. It should clarify a claim that the design and data can genuinely evaluate.

Good practice: distinguish confirmatory hypotheses specified before analysis from exploratory findings developed after examining the data.

Frequently asked questions

The appropriate hypothesis depends on the research objective, study design, variables, expected direction, comparison structure, and whether the goal is difference, association, prediction, equivalence, noninferiority, mediation, or moderation.

The null hypothesis usually states that no difference, association, effect, or relationship exists. The alternative hypothesis states that a difference, association, effect, or relationship exists, or specifies a directional or threshold-based claim.

A directional hypothesis predicts the expected direction of an effect or relationship, such as one group scoring higher than another or two variables being positively associated.

Use a nondirectional hypothesis when theory or prior evidence does not justify predicting whether the effect will be positive or negative, or which group will have the higher value.

Many qualitative studies use research questions rather than formal hypotheses because their purpose is exploratory, interpretive, or theory-generating. Some qualitative or mixed-methods projects may still include propositions or expectations, but these are not always tested statistically.

An equivalence hypothesis tests whether the difference between conditions is small enough to fall within a predefined equivalence margin. It is not the same as failing to detect a significant difference.

A noninferiority hypothesis tests whether a new treatment or method is not worse than a comparison by more than a predefined margin.

A mediation hypothesis proposes that the relationship between a predictor and an outcome operates partly or fully through an intervening variable called a mediator.

A moderation hypothesis proposes that the strength or direction of a relationship differs depending on the level of another variable called a moderator.

Formal quantitative hypothesis testing usually involves a null and an alternative hypothesis, but some descriptive, exploratory, qualitative, feasibility, and estimation-focused studies may rely primarily on research questions, objectives, or confidence intervals.

Observational studies may examine associations, but causal wording should be used cautiously unless the design and assumptions support causal inference.

A testable hypothesis identifies measurable variables, a defined population, an expected relationship or difference, and a design capable of producing evidence relevant to the claim.
